Prof. Dr. Veronica Barassi

Prof. Barassi is a Professor in Media and Communication Studies in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS-HSG) at the University of St. Gallen, as well as the Chair of Media and Culture in the Institute of Media and Communication Management (MCM-HSG). Her research is interdisciplinary, critical, and cross-cultural in nature and is primarily concerned with the understanding of the democratic possibilities and challenges of data technologies and artificial intelligence. She authored three books including Child | Data | Citizen: How Tech Companies are Profiling Us from before Birth (MIT Press, 2020) and different articles in top ranked academic publications. She believes in publicly engaged research, her findings have featured in international mainstream in the UK, US, Canada, Italy, India, Poland and other countries. Her Ted Talk has reached more than 2 million views.
