The Nubian Questions. What kind of ethnography is possible in a state out of time? |
Harby-Bemmann is an Egyptian, Kuwait-born filmmaker, producer, anthropologist, and writer currently pursuing a PhD in Media Anthropology at Friedrich Schiller University Jena and Lucerne University of Applied Sciences & Arts. She holds a master’s degree in “Visual Anthropology, Media and Documentary Practices” from the University of Münster.
Harby-Bemmann has directed several short films in Egypt and played an active role in numerous film festivals. She served as vice president of the Alexandria Short Film Festival (2015-2017) and was a tutor at the Arab Academy for Science and Technology. She co-authored the feminist books Wings, Beyond the Borders (2023) and Grandmothers, the Richness of Memory (2024). Currently, she works as CEO assistant at ZKM (Centre for Media and Art Karlsruhe).
Together with Rene Bemmann, she co-founded a media production company in Germany, which produced the essay film The Last Letter to Nasser (2023), awarded a Jury Special Mention at the Luxor African Film Festival.
